Sign Language Interpreting Services - The Americans with Disabilities Act

Sign Language Interpreting Services

The Americans with Disabilities Act

“An Act to establish a clear and comprehensive prohibition of discrimination on the basis of disability.”

In 1990, President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),which provided more equal access to services and employment opportunities to 49 million Americans with disabilities.

Along with the Federal Rehabilitation Act and the Kansas Act Against Discrimination, this legislation has guaranteed people who are deaf or hard of hearing the legal right to auxiliary aids and interpreting services.

We have made much progress in the law but many barriers to services and employment still exist for the deaf and hard of hearing.  Providing clear communication through a qualified sign language interpreter can lessen and often eliminate this inequality.

Sign language interpreters facilitate understanding between both the hearing and deaf, communicating both the content and the emotion of the message.  Above all, interpreters maintain impartiality and confidentiality in all situations.
